Hi, thanks for checking in. Still going through some stuff with my health, the eye issue hasn’t resolved itself, I need more surgery. There was an issue whether I do the surgery in Miami (#1 ranked hospital, near my sister, etc.) *this week* or stay in SF. Of course I made the insane decision to stay in SF. Surgery is now scheduled @ UCSF again, this time for Oct. 2; issue’s has dragged on too long, made me into an old(er) man. Meanwhile, been working on a new app, trying to stay busy, keep afloat and current until this health storm blows over.

I’ve been to the #1 specialist in the world for this problem. And oddly passed, that was in Miami,
Bascolm Palmer, in MIami. I’m more mentally than physically ill at this point. Just couldn’t stay at my sister’s palce. I’m there now, drivin’ me nuts here.

Are you in Miami??
Joe Rosen

Joe Rosen
North west of Miami, a town called Coral Springs, about 50 miles.
I was in Miami earlier today at the eye hospital.
As I said, could’a had the surgery there, it was all scheduled. I bailed out.

It’s a specialized issue, there aren’t many surgical choices. I went to the top of the line in Miami.
I dunno why I turned it down, kinda nuts. I just wanted to go back to my apartment in SF. I went crazy here in Florida.

I had hired someone, it was hell.
Too young for that sort of thing, drove me nuts.
But yeah, I’ve gota problem.
Really an awful situation. I bascially never changed, stayed the same from all those years ago, never grew up. But got old, and got sick.

basically a personal broadcast & listen location based radio app– leave behind drops of sound tied to the place you’re at, and the next person that visits the same place can hear what you said.
Not an original idea, just a riff on stuff that’s been done before in not exactly the same form.

Okay, sending you a link. Keep in mind though graphics are rough placeholder, the programming however is complete. The most important feature is the “radio” mode — even when the app’s in the background, if you’re in playback mode and you travel into an area where a sound has previously been left behind it will automatically play back….

Yeah, this was an exercise in location programming more than anything else.
Very simple app, three main screens. Like Crayovie in that it’s very simple to use. Here are some notes, again, just my notes, not for publ;ic consumption, this isn’t a public facing page.

I don’t have the experience hacking custom hardware for a project like that, I’d be learning something new too. I’ve seen examples i.e. attaching a GPS module to a e.g. Arduino board, and then I suppose the Arduino could also drive an external display. But perhaps an easier (although less interesting) approach would be to program a custom application for something like a cheap Android table or an iPad mini. The iPad could easily drive an external display (perhaps even wirelessly, through air play). With an off the shelf Android or iOS tablet you’d have a light-weight network connected GPS capable application engine w/ good battery life (well, you’d still obviously need additional power to drive the 4×6′ external display) without having to build all your own hardware from scratch. You could focus on software that way, minimizing the hardware side of the equation

The Ad Bike pod would have batteries to drive the display & audio. Would use off the shelf hardware, focus on software.
Maybe we can spec together
Joe Rosen

Joe Rosen
I like the idea. What kind of hardware were you considering to drive to the logic and display? Again, it seems plausible one could write for iOS or Android, and leverage the mobile data connectivity, GPS, graphics display driver, etc. of an existing tablet device i.e. rather than build your own proprietary hardware engine. I wouldn’t know about packaging it all together (power/battery management, screen display, etc.) to fit on a bike, but I would know how to author the kind of location based display software I think you may have in mind. (I can also imagine a backend web based system for managing the locations & associated display/sounds specific to each device.)

Some thoughts….
Re: the “WiFi Router” and “Media Server”? Both those capabilities (data network/Internet connectivity and media player) are built into the tablet device, which would likely be using 3G or better data (and not WiFi).
It would be preferable to pre-load the media ahead of a ride/route; i.e. still using the Internet to load up the device, however ahead of the time the bike goes out on a planned route. The only data you’d want to exchange in real time would be relatively low bandwidth stuff, e.g. location triggers and people counts. I’m wondering about the people counting, i.e. the computing power needed to real time process that kind of image recognition. I could however imagine capturing a lot of still images (maybe every few seconds) and sending those to the backend services as a periodic synchronous background task and letting the serverside do the image recognition/heavy duty crunching.
