Alan M. Hochman

so whats up

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:40pm

Joe Rosen

Hey. Just submitted the latest version of the drawing app to the App Store. If you’d still like the latest version and don’t want to wait the week or two it will take for Apple to release it, lemme know (will require your iPad’s unique device ID as explained a couple of days ago). Otherwise not a thing (re: “what’s up”), an unusually boring, dull, and routine existence and waiting for three days of Northern CA winter rain to end.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:41pm

Alan M. Hochman

sounds upbeat

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:41pm

Joe Rosen

Ha, yeah.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:42pm

Alan M. Hochman

Did you have any family washed out by Sandy in Brooklyn??

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:45pm

Joe Rosen

I have some old friends that got slammed pretty hard, in Lido Beach LI (at the edge of Long Beach LI), Atlantic basically was in their ground floor. But they survived, lost two cars and had a huge flood (waist deep water at the street), but came through okay w/ property otherwise relatively in tact. No friends or family in Brooklyn anymore, Manhattan friends all did okay albeit no power for a week. My sister lives in South Florida, as does my Ma, who just turned 89. You and family I hope weren’t too effected by the storm.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:46pm

Alan M. Hochman

UWS, just trees down.

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:46pm

Joe Rosen

Some pictures however from my old Sheepshead Bay childhood haunting grounds were pretty dramatic.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:46pm

Alan M. Hochman

Son whats next for you??

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:47pm

Joe Rosen

I have no idea.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:47pm

Alan M. Hochman

Promising.

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:47pm

Joe Rosen

I’ve been in Northern CA for 15 years. Maybe time to move on.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:47pm

Alan M. Hochman

Your already in Mecca

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:48pm

Joe Rosen

No New York to go back to really. SO dunno what’s next. I think I may’ve mentioned when we spoke a few years back I lived in Oregon for a year in 2000/2001, maybe go back there. I dunno.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:48pm

Alan M. Hochman

Where in OR?

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:48pm

Joe Rosen

Portland.

Anwaywhere outside Portland freaked the Jew in me too far out.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:48pm

Alan M. Hochman

I lived in Eugene in 1976 or 1977

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:48pm

Joe Rosen

I remember,

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:49pm

Alan M. Hochman

Maybe you should go into another field

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:49pm

Joe Rosen

Been a weird ride here in the Bay Area. Like I said, maybe time to move on.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:50pm

Alan M. Hochman

I thought you made it big

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:50pm

Joe Rosen

Ha, yeah. I’ll be 54 next year.

Had my share of opportunity.

Blew it big the past two years.

Crap shoot, gambling really.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:50pm

Alan M. Hochman

Why is that

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:50pm

Joe Rosen

Picking which opportunities to go with. Has nothing to do with anything but timing adn luck.

Product means little or nothing.

That’s Silicon Valley.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:51pm

Alan M. Hochman

How close did you get??

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:51pm

Joe Rosen

Amazingly close more than onne time, enough to drive me nuts. But close doens’;t count.

Our old friend Mike never gave up, BTW.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:51pm

Alan M. Hochman

meaning

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:51pm

Joe Rosen

He had a great success finally the past two years.

He finally rode along with a winner, purchased by Google.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:52pm

Alan M. Hochman

what did it do for him

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:52pm

Joe Rosen

Good for him, he really hung in there. Also came close too many times to count.

He worked about a year for a small company, that I passed on stupidly.

Which got aquired by Google.

But like I said, if anyone worked hader at it than Mike I dunno who. He had his hand in at least 1/2 dozen starups that I knew of. Many came close, but this one struck it big.

But like I said, Las Vegas odds, really hard to predict what will be a financial success and what won’t.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:54pm

Alan M. Hochman

Whats he doing now at Google??

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:54pm

Joe Rosen

Timing is everything.

HE’s a senior prototyper/researcher.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:55pm

Alan M. Hochman

I sold my stupid company in 2000.

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:55pm

Joe Rosen

I don’t think he’s working on anything to do with his old startup.

But maybe he is, I haven’t talked to him ina  few months. We exhange email once ina w hile.

He’s the same, aged really well. He just got married recently.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:55pm

Alan M. Hochman

May take a full time job to stay in the game

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:56pm

Joe Rosen

I can’t bring myself to work for anyone these days. It’s a problem.

So much of what people want is stupid. And if I’m gonna work on dumb stuff might as well be my own dumb stuff.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:56pm

Alan M. Hochman

Why cant you make it big, your a bright guy

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:56pm

Joe Rosen

Ha, I’m a schmuck.

Seriously, I’ve had my share of opportunity.

The fact that nothing’s struck big is a puzzlement. But a) I’m a schmuck, alweays have been. and b) as I said, soemtimes it’s just timing & luck.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:57pm

Alan M. Hochman

Are you going to do something with the crayon app?

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:57pm

Joe Rosen

I dunno. This most recenmt version I just submit is disappointing.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:58pm

Alan M. Hochman

Its all packaging

why is that

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:58pm

Joe Rosen

That too maybe.

The business has chanmged I’d say in the past two years even.

Rougher than it was. More people in it tahn ever.

A good app is a lot harder to make than it seems at the surface.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:58pm

Alan M. Hochman

Just need a decent viral idea

Joe Rosen

12/1, 9:59pm

Joe Rosen

Easier said , right?

The virality part too, harder to nail down that it appears.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 9:59pm

Alan M. Hochman

I’ve been working on specing a social hardware product

Investigated manufacturing

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:00pm

Joe Rosen

Hardware? Tough, requires capital investment. But yeah, at least something tangible, manufacture something and sell it.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:00pm

Alan M. Hochman

Mobil + Social

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:00pm

Joe Rosen

One of the pseudo DIver spinoffs sells a 360 video lens for the iPhone.

kogeto.com

Started as a kickstarter project.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:01pm

Alan M. Hochman

What I learned from selling my company is that their an tons of companies out there that would rather buy the try to build

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:01pm

Joe Rosen

That’s still true. Buy vs Build….

Also, Google bought the company Mike was workinmg for a sa strategic move, before Facebook bought ’em and to shut ;em down/

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:02pm

Alan M. Hochman

Yes lots of stupid ideas, stupid money

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:02pm

Joe Rosen

That was my take, dunno the facts but it looked like a strategic move to shut ’em down.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:02pm

Alan M. Hochman

You got to design for 13 year olds

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:02pm

Joe Rosen

Amazingly stupid money here. Watched it fly by for 15+ years now.

You have kids, right?

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:03pm

Alan M. Hochman

Twins. 13 year olds.

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:03pm

Joe Rosen

See, I have no idea what a kid wants. That’s a problem. But plenty of old people like thgeir iPhones, Android devices, etc.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:03pm

Alan M. Hochman

Kids do not talk on the phone

text, share pictures

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:03pm

Joe Rosen

Either do I much anymore, BTW. Prefer to do what we’re doing now.

I spent a couple of years after Diver developinga  photo/video mobile platform.

Also not as easy as it looks. Got bogged down in tech details, and a partnership that in the end wasn’t so great.

Who you partner with is also extremely important, another lesson.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:05pm

Alan M. Hochman

I think the crayon could work in some form

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:05pm

Joe Rosen

I agree. “socail drawing” someone gonna go big w/ that concept, beyond e.g. Zinga/Draw SOmething.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:06pm

Alan M. Hochman

My son would probably like to deface an image

I like grafitti

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:06pm

Joe Rosen

I started working on it in June, about 4-5 months ago, right after Draw SOmething was acquired. But again,. got bogged down in detail, really hard to do these things totally on your own.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:06pm

Alan M. Hochman

in the subways

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:07pm

Joe Rosen

THat ‘s another idea, BTW, “augmented reality”, draw on top of real imagery, etc. Maybe even in real time.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:07pm

Alan M. Hochman

Facebook will be looking for real time gaming soon

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:08pm

Joe Rosen

Been thinking more about that, using the cmaera to detect some real world scene and adding some layer in top of thgat.

Saw something kinda interesting rcently with clothing.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:08pm

Alan M. Hochman

Anything that keeps you updating your page

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:08pm

Joe Rosen

Where the clothes had images that came to life when you pointed an app /camera at ’em. Hard to explain….

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:09pm

Alan M. Hochman

Secret in keeping it simple and hip

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:09pm

Joe Rosen

Simple is key.

Everyone, including people who know better get all caught up in adding unecessary layers, fucnytionality, etc.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:10pm

Alan M. Hochman

I did that on my last project.

Too much technology

too long to market

too expensive to create

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:11pm

Joe Rosen

To answer your question, earlier, why disappijnted, I think in this version of the crayon app I got off the KEEP IT SIMPLE path. I added a threaded discusion feature, which was a) complicated, b) got away from the images and no words, and c) took too long to implement.

Right, biggest issue for me is focusing on keeping it simple and getting things out as quickly as possible. I followed your last project BTW. The Etsy sort of spinoff.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:11pm

Alan M. Hochman

Id keep the discussion in FB

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:12pm

Joe Rosen

I’m wondering if tghere’s FB backlash though, people don’t want their account info shared w/ 3rd party apps, Everyone’s suspsicious.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:12pm

Alan M. Hochman

My kids dont use FB

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:12pm

Joe Rosen

I know someone who wnet to work at Etsy near the ebginning, moved from here back to NY. Thpought he was nuts at the time, gave up a good job at Yahoo.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:13pm

Alan M. Hochman

Kids dont understand privacy

or care

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:13pm

Joe Rosen

INteretsing your kids don’t use Facebook.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:14pm

Alan M. Hochman

Not visual enough, too much writting

needs to be short and bursty

Camera is the best interface

no talent, skills required

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:15pm

Joe Rosen

That’s why Instagram is such a big hit. Mentioned this the other day, even drawing may be too much effort.

Instagram filters make everyone feel like an “artist”.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:16pm

Alan M. Hochman

I think drawing is a more refined skill

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:16pm

Joe Rosen

They also did nail the user experience, but not a $1Billion worth. Go figure.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:16pm

Alan M. Hochman

My wife doodles in the car

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:16pm

Joe Rosen

As I said, this app is VERY crude quick drawing, nothing like Paper or other more sophiticated iPAd drawing apps,

if you want o try the latest version of the Crayon app on your wife’s iPad use this app to get the device ID< and email it to me joro@stanford.edu

I’ll compile a prerelease version of the app you can downlaod.

Hang on for URL

THis app gets UDID: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ad-hoc-helper/id285691333?mt=8

12/1, 10:17pm

Alan M. Hochman

Ill ask my wife she has the iPad

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:17pm

Joe Rosen

Gotta head out… getting late here.

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:22pm

Joe Rosen

The wearbales as I said could be interesting.

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:23pm

Joe Rosen

You should think about not just embedding ahdrware in clothes or tangible objects, but some kind of patterns that could be picked up by smartphone cmaeras and used to create an augmented relaity experience. The clothingc ompany I emntioned, they had tshorts that sorta came to life.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:23pm

Alan M. Hochman

I spent a couple of months researching and documenting

No embedding in cloths

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:23pm

Joe Rosen

I have another friend here who’s a clothing designer working ona  rpoduct now (fpor adults) that combines wearbale sand phones.

Alan M. Hochman

12/1, 10:24pm

Alan M. Hochman

thats kinda what im saying. wearable + phone + internet

Joe Rosen

12/1, 10:24pm

Joe Rosen

What I still love about software is you can build the busienss w/o a heavy cash investment. Combine taht perhaps with tangible goods like wearables, a great combo.

Alan M. Hochman

Still wanna talk, sorry, been a weird week, what with the two back 2 back power outages. BTW, just released another version of Crayovie (version 1.2.0),  a few improvements and most notably the ability to add comments to doodles. It (version 1.2.0) should be in the App Store shortly, Apple usually process fairly quickly after approval and developer release. Anyway, when’s a good time for you? I’m around all weekend.

The upside to these kinds of things is in meeting new people, contacts, potential collaborators, funders, etc. It’s always a mistake to try and build stuff alone. Alas, I honestly feel “too old” right now for those kinds of contests and events. I feel like the “creepy old person in the room” (which I am!) when I attend a talk or participate in those kinds of things. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to continue trying out new ideas. Loved the social/digital jewel product we discussed. I’ll think more about it and write again if I have anything of value/interest to add. Meanwhile, keep me posted, glad to consult on the software side, and help bring the idea further along.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:42pm

Alan M. Hochman

what kind?

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:42pm

Joe Rosen

I was thinking the cheapest possible reliable transportation, so I started today w/ base 2013 Corolla. But everything I’ve read this evening says “don’t buy that car”.

I have two old cars I first need to unload, which is also proving difficult. One of which I’m particularly attached to.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:43pm

Alan M. Hochman

I drive a Volvo XC70 2004, 160,000 miles

What kinda car do u need to unload

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:44pm

Joe Rosen

I’ve got a ’91 Miata which I never drive anymore. Breaks my heart to let it go but I think the time has come. Hang on I’ll send some picts, like porno (eh, not quite but good just the  same)….

My dad’s ’92 Camry. I’ve had it here since maybe 2005. Was in Florida at my sister’s before that.

Been using the Camry as every day junk transport since then. But now after 2 decades is starting to finally feel unreliable (-:.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:47pm

Alan M. Hochman

I can ask some friends who are looking for cars

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:47pm

Joe Rosen

Delaer offered me $1500 for the Camry, I was shocked. Thought it was junk.

Dealer w/ trade in

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:48pm

Joe Rosen

<60K miles. They said they could get $3K for it, again I was shocked. So they ofefred me 1/2 on trade in.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:48pm

Alan M. Hochman

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:48pm

Joe Rosen

I figured it worthless, the salesmen apologized to me when he made the $1.5K offer, I laughed.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:48pm

Alan M. Hochman

whats wrong w/ Miata

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:49pm

Joe Rosen

I laughed becviuse I thought it was worthless. He thought I was insulted.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:49pm

Alan M. Hochman

keep laughing

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:49pm

Joe Rosen

The Miata is in PERFECT condition, got it new in ’91. You may recall my dad was in the business sorta.

Just time to let it go. It just sits in my one parking space.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:49pm

Alan M. Hochman

dont remember

How much for Miata? # miles?

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:50pm

Joe Rosen

I need reliable old man transportation now. Tired of riding around in old cars.

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:51pm

Joe Rosen

I have no idea what to ask for the Miata, Dealer offered me $1K which I also laughed but because that was crazy low. I see it’s actually starting to become collectible. I have a friend here who sells classics, I emailed him this afternoon to get an idea of valkue, waiting for his response.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:52pm

Alan M. Hochman

You mean 20K?

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:52pm

Joe Rosen

So I’m looking at cheap compacts, Corolla, Hyundai, Honda, even Ford.

Max $20K, I was thinking even less.

Could get the base Corolla for $15K.

Alan M. Hochman

12/18, 10:53pm

Alan M. Hochman

Id go w/ Honad, I used to have one, relaible

Honda

Joe Rosen

12/18, 10:54pm

Joe Rosen

Civic much nicer car than Toyota Corolla. Alas, the Toyota dealer is around the corner. I found the whole experience of even walking over there 10 blocks away exhausting (-:.

Anyway, the whole process freaked me out. Worse than when I was looking to buy an apartment a few years back.

Even $15K right now seems like a lot. Crazy expenses. I’ll figure it out. Headed to shower. Will maybe take a look at the Volvo, test drive, I hadn’t considered it, but you the 2nd person today to say Volvo.

Later.

Joe Rosen

12/21, 2:43pm

Joe Rosen

Hi Alan. No plans for the Xmas weekend, I’ll be around. Very gloomy Winter Solstice day here, big rain. Plan for today: expanding an Amazon Web Services Elastic Block Store (virtual HD) from 80GB to 100GB. Very unexciting life, might as well just be dead already. (-:.

Very gloomy, seasonal depression. Please get help.

Do something fun.
