A couple of long stories to share. But now must head out and get a lbs of coffee. Back later. Let’s talk. Spent the past two years mostly developing my own projects, which may or may not have been a huge mistake. Turned down one or two opportunities which at the time seemed lame but could’a been better choices.

Glad you like the Crayon idea.
The idea’s basically a “right brained” Twitter, 90 seconds (as compared w/ 140 characters) to draw whatever’s on your mind.
Just a handful of beta users for now, but they seem to like the idea.

Very crude drawing tools though, the concept is just free association, quick doodle of whatever you’re thinking about.
Okay, COFFEE. Back soon.
(Nothin’ changes, man. Good to talk. Just like old days.)

Hey, that’s great! I’m about to release a new version (1.2.0) later today with bug fixes and two significant new features, 1) automatic loading of more stuff (infinite scrolling); and 2) threaded discussion, i.e. he ability to comment on each doodle right in the app. If you send the UDID of the iPad I’ll add it to the “Adhoc” distribution list and you can automatically install the latest versions w/o first waiting for the Apple App Store nazis to review and release…..

That app’s very simple, AdHoc Helper, just mail me the UDID generated by the app. joro@stanford.edu
Apple allows something called “over the air” “adhoc” distribution if the developer specifically compiles a device’s UDID into the app binary.

It’s not a precision drawing app. The whole idea is you have 90 seconds to quickly and crudely doodle whatever’s on your mind.

“Right brain” Twitter, 90 seconds to doodle a drawing vs. 140 characters to compose text.

id say not same constraint
might get better results if user has unlimited time

The point’s not to think too much about it, same as with Twitter’s 140 character limit. But I guess this is more abstract than Twitter, also easier to bang out 140 characters than to draw something. Not everyone likes to draw, everyone likes to write. Seemed like a clever idea, but truth is it may be too abstract.

Instagram’s a success for a whole multitude of reasons, one being a superior user experience, some of which is design driven, and some pure technical execution. But yes, everyone / anyone can snap share a photo, apply a filter and “feel like an artist”, whereas I’ve already encountered that most people hate to draw, too much work.

I spent several years (and my last two at Stanford) working on a mobile remix and photo/video sharing app (www.mobltz.net). It failed to gain an audience on a lot of levels, admittedly a very confusing UE, but as importantly it was over intellectualized. The remix idea was too complicated, Instagram (in addition to nailing the UE) just went straight for simple still image sharing. No complex multimedia remixing”

Anyway, I hope she’s not disappointed by Crayovie. If kept in the right perspective (it’s not for precision drawing, just really quick “140 character” doodles), she might like it. I hope so. Either way feeback of any kind is greatly appreciated.

I’m kinda bogged down in Crayovie @ the moment, but may have to pivot on the idea soon, if it doesn’t gain momentum. Worked on another more commercial prototype before Crayovie, back in June, do you remember a TV show from our childhood called Winky Dink and You? First “interactive TV show, draw on TV screen w/ crayons and vinyl cover.

The playback sequencer, DIVER is mostly over. Haven’t done any development in almost 3 years. Although three patents were awarded, so we’ll see if any tries to license it. I doubt it at this point. Old news.

short story, based on an old TV cartoon series (called Winky Dink, the first ever “interactive” television program from the days before any of the technology we now love even existed). Take a look at a video document of the prototype:

Someone brought it to DVD with a boxed set of crayons back in 2001. I’ve been trying to negotiate a licensing deal to make it a virtual app for several months now, things sorta stalled. So I put it down to work on Crayovie. But I think Winky Dink may have some commercial applicability, several business models, including straight forward episode purchases for e.g. $.99 a piece. In the end it’s easier to just have a “real job” (something I also have to do — been working with a small startup here in the health insurance arena just to pay the bills; getting too old for more than one job/project at a time).

Have to head out for lunch, break in a rainy day here. Back later, if you snag taht UDID with that app send it, I’ll be compiling the new version hopefully by tonight. The older version the one in the APp STore won’t play the newest doodles once the beta testers start drawing on v 1.2.0.
